EA's Javelin Anti-Cheat Faces 100,000 Reports in Open Beta

The open beta for Electronic Arts' highly anticipated new military shooter was inundated with players using unauthorized software within hours of its launch, highlighting the persistent challenge developers face in maintaining fair play.
Across social media and gaming forums, a flood of player reports detailed encounters with cheaters, disrupting the early experience. In response to the community feedback, a representative from EA's anti-cheat team, using the handle AC, provided data on the official game forums. According to the post, the team logged over 100,000 player reports of suspected cheating in the first 48 hours. Furthermore, the company's systems proactively blocked more than 330,000 attempts to interfere with the game's integrity or bypass its security measures.
The Kernel-Level Defense: Javelin
To combat this threat, EA employs a kernel-level anti-cheat solution named Javelin. Similar to systems used in other competitive titles, this approach grants the software deep-level access to a computer's operating system. This privileged position allows it to scrutinize all running processes, aiming to identify cheat programs that often masquerade as legitimate background software.
In the forum communication, AC was careful to temper expectations, clarifying that no anti-cheat system can offer a perfect guarantee against cheating. The post also addressed the game's use of Microsoft's Secure Boot feature, a Windows security protocol that helps ensure a trusted boot path from the hardware up.
Secure Boot as a Strategic Barrier
AC emphasized that Secure Boot is not a standalone solution. "Secure Boot is how you're helping us build up our arsenal," the post explained. It functions as an additional, significant hurdle for cheat developers, complicating the creation of their programs and enhancing the anti-cheat team's ability to detect them when they emerge.
The anti-cheat lead framed the effort as a continuous arms race. "Anti-Cheat isn't one and done, it's an ever evolving battlefield," AC wrote, noting that strategies effective in past titles do not always translate to new environments. When contacted for an update, an EA spokesperson stated that there was no new information to share regarding the number of accounts subsequently banned.
An Industry-Wide Challenge
The struggle against malicious software and unfair advantages is a universal issue in online gaming. Other major publishers, including Riot Games with Valorant and Activision with the Call of Duty franchise, have similarly adopted robust, kernel-level defenses. The approach extends beyond simply banning offending accounts. Industry strategies often include:
